Verbrennungstabilität refers to the ability of a combustion process to maintain a stable and continuous flame under varying conditions. It is a critical parameter in the design and operation of combustion devices such as furnaces, boilers, gas turbines, and internal combustion engines. A stable combustion process ensures efficient energy conversion, minimizes pollutant formation, and prevents undesirable phenomena like flame blow-off or flashback.

Several factors influence verbrennungstabilität. These include the properties of the fuel and oxidizer, such as their chemical composition, mixing ratio, and temperature. The geometry of the combustion chamber and the presence of swirl or turbulence also play significant roles in promoting stable mixing and flame anchoring. Additionally, the flow rate of the reactants and the heat release rate within the chamber are important determinants.

Instability can manifest in various ways. Flame blow-off occurs when the flow velocity exceeds the flame propagation speed, causing the flame to detach from the burner. Flashback, conversely, happens when the flame propagates upstream into the burner, potentially causing damage. These instabilities can lead to incomplete combustion, reduced efficiency, and increased emissions of harmful substances like carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbons.

Ensuring verbrennungstabilität often involves careful burner design, control of air-fuel ratios, and sometimes the use of pilot flames or recirculation of hot combustion products to preheat the incoming reactants. Understanding and controlling verbrennungstabilität is essential for safe, reliable, and efficient combustion applications.
