Verbrauchselektroden, also known as consumable electrodes, are a critical component in various industrial processes, particularly in arc welding and melting operations. These electrodes are designed to be consumed during the process, adding material to the workpiece or facilitating the transfer of heat and energy. Their primary function is to melt and contribute to the formation of a weld or molten metal.

In arc welding, consumable electrodes are typically made of metal wires. As an electric arc forms between the electrode and the workpiece, the electrode melts, depositing filler metal onto the joint. This process joins two pieces of metal together. Common examples include flux-cored wires and solid wires used in MIG (Metal Inert Gas) and MAG (Metal Active Gas) welding. The composition of the consumable electrode is carefully chosen to match the base metal being welded, ensuring the integrity and strength of the final joint.

Beyond welding, consumable electrodes are employed in processes like electroslag remelting (ESR) and vacuum arc remelting (VAR). In these applications, a consumable electrode made of a specific alloy is progressively melted, allowing for purification and homogenization of the metal. This results in high-quality ingots used in demanding applications such as aerospace and tool manufacturing. The controlled consumption of the electrode is key to achieving the desired metallurgical properties.
