Velumduring

Velumduring is a term that refers to the velum, also known as the soft palate, in its state of being lowered or relaxed. This action is significant in several physiological processes, most notably in speech and swallowing. When the velum is in a lowered position, it creates an opening between the oral cavity and the nasal cavity, allowing air to pass through the nose. This is crucial for the production of nasal sounds in spoken language, such as 'm', 'n', and 'ng'. Conversely, during the production of non-nasal sounds, the velum is raised to block off the nasal passage, directing air solely through the mouth.

The position of the velum is controlled by a complex interplay of muscles in the throat and mouth. During swallowing, the velum raises to prevent food or liquid from entering the nasal cavity. If the velum does not close properly during swallowing, a condition known as velopharyngeal insufficiency can occur, leading to nasal regurgitation.
