Velariviruses
Velariviruses are a group of viruses that infect the velar region of the upper respiratory tract, specifically the velum, which is the soft palate. They are known to cause velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI), a condition where the velum does not close properly during swallowing, leading to speech and swallowing difficulties. Velariviruses are typically transmitted through respiratory droplets and can affect both children and adults. Common symptoms include nasal regurgitation, speech impediments, and difficulty with swallowing. Diagnosis is often made through clinical observation and may be confirmed through imaging studies or endoscopy. Treatment options are limited and usually involve supportive care, such as speech therapy and dietary modifications. Prevention strategies include good hand hygiene and avoiding close contact with infected individuals. The exact mechanism of velarivirus infection and its impact on the velum are still areas of ongoing research.
