Vekselstrømskrets, also known as AC circuit, is an electrical circuit that is powered by an alternating current (AC) voltage source. Unlike direct current (DC) circuits where the current flows in one direction, AC circuits have a current that periodically reverses its direction. This reversal is typically sinusoidal, meaning the voltage and current change smoothly over time.

Key components in AC circuits include resistors, capacitors, and inductors. Resistors behave similarly in both AC and DC circuits, dissipating energy as heat. Capacitors store electrical energy in an electric field and oppose changes in voltage. Inductors store energy in a magnetic field and oppose changes in current. The behavior of capacitors and inductors in AC circuits is frequency-dependent, characterized by their reactance.

The analysis of AC circuits involves concepts like impedance, which is the total opposition to current flow, combining resistance and reactance. Phasors are often used to represent AC voltages and currents graphically, simplifying calculations involving phase differences between these quantities. AC circuits are fundamental to modern power distribution systems, enabling efficient transmission of electricity over long distances due to the ease of voltage transformation using transformers. They are also prevalent in electronics, communication systems, and many household appliances.
