The vedrustussüsteem, also known as the "Vedrustussystem" or "Vedrustus System," refers to a traditional Estonian folk belief system centered around the concept of *vedrustus*, which translates roughly to "evil eye" or "malevolent gaze." This belief is rooted in Estonian folklore and has been documented across various Baltic and Slavic cultures, though it holds particular significance in Estonian rural traditions.

According to the belief, an individual’s gaze—whether intentional or not—can carry harmful energy, causing misfortune, illness, or other negative outcomes. This concept is often linked to envy, jealousy, or even admiration, where an envious person might unknowingly inflict harm through their stare. To counteract this, various protective measures were employed, such as wearing amulets, reciting charms, or performing rituals to ward off the malevolent influence.

In Estonian folklore, the *vedrustus* was sometimes associated with supernatural entities or curses, particularly in contexts involving livestock, crops, or personal well-being. Farmers, for instance, might avoid showing off their healthy animals or abundant harvests to prevent attracting the *vedrustus*. Charms, such as knots tied in cloth or specific hand gestures, were believed to shield individuals from harm.

While the vedrustussüsteem is no longer widely practiced in modern Estonia, remnants of these beliefs persist in cultural traditions and superstitions.
