Varresidual is a term that appears in statistical modeling, specifically within the context of regression analysis. It refers to the variation in the dependent variable that is not explained by the independent variables included in the model. In simpler terms, it is the part of the outcome that remains after accounting for the predictors.

When a regression model is built, it attempts to describe the relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables. The model estimates coefficients that represent the strength and direction of these relationships. The predicted values of the dependent variable are generated based on these relationships. However, no model can perfectly capture all the factors influencing a dependent variable. The difference between the actual observed values of the dependent variable and the values predicted by the model constitutes the residuals.

Varresidual, therefore, quantifies the extent of this unexplained variability. A large varresidual indicates that the independent variables in the model do not adequately explain the variation in the dependent variable, suggesting that other factors, unmeasured or unaccounted for, are playing a significant role. Conversely, a small varresidual suggests that the model effectively captures most of the variability in the dependent variable, implying that the chosen independent variables are good predictors.
