Varosia

Varosia is a ghost town located on the coast of Famagusta Bay in Cyprus. It was once a popular tourist resort and the second-largest city in Cyprus. Following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, Varosia was evacuated and has remained abandoned ever since. The area is now fenced off and under the control of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

The town's rapid development in the 1960s and early 1970s made it a highly sought-after destination for tourists, particularly from Europe and North America. Hotels, apartment buildings, and luxury residences were constructed, and the area boasted a vibrant nightlife and a bustling economy. Following the division of the island, Varosia became a no-man's-land, a stark reminder of the ongoing Cyprus dispute.

Over the decades, the buildings have fallen into disrepair, and nature has begun to reclaim the area. The empty streets and decaying structures have led to Varosia being described as a "ghost town." International efforts have been made to address the status of Varosia, with various proposals for its resettlement or redevelopment. However, due to the complex political situation, no significant changes have occurred. The future of Varosia remains uncertain, deeply intertwined with the broader political landscape of Cyprus.
