Varningsord

Varningsord is the Swedish term for the signal words used in hazard communication on labels and safety data sheets. In English, they are called signal words. Under the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) and the European Union’s CLP Regulation, there are two signal words: "Fara" (Danger) and "Varning" (Warning). These words accompany hazard statements and pictograms to indicate the level of hazard posed by a substance or mixture.

The choice of a varningsord is tied to the classification of the substance by hazard class and category. More severe hazards require the word "Fara," while less severe hazards use "Varning." When a product has multiple hazards, the most severe applicable signal word is used. Some very specific hazard classes may operate under exceptions, but in general a signal word is required on the label whenever hazard statements are present.

In practice, varningsord serves to provide a quick warning to users, alongside other label elements such as pictograms and precautionary statements. The Swedish translations align with CLP requirements across EU member states, ensuring consistent communication for workers, consumers, and emergency responders. The concept also extends to safety data sheets, where signal words appear to reinforce hazard information.
