Various Flächeneinheiten, or area units, are used to measure two-dimensional spaces. These units are typically derived from linear units, where the area is the product of two lengths. The most common system is the metric system, which uses the square meter (m²) as its base unit. Derived metric units include square kilometers (km²), square centimeters (cm²), and square millimeters (mm²), each representing the area of a square with sides of the corresponding linear unit. For instance, a square kilometer is the area of a square with sides of one kilometer.

In contrast, the imperial and US customary systems use different base units. The square foot (ft²) is a common unit, derived from the foot. Other imperial units include the square inch (in²), square yard (yd²), and the acre, which is a larger unit often used for land measurement. The square mile (mi²) is used for very large areas. Conversions between these systems exist but can be complex due to the arbitrary relationships between their base linear units. For example, one acre is approximately 4047 square meters. Understanding these various units is crucial for accurate measurement and comparison in fields ranging from construction and land surveying to cartography and everyday life.
