Variantieontleding

Variantieontleding, also known as Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), is a statistical technique used to compare the means of two or more groups. It achieves this by partitioning the total observed variance in a dataset into different sources of variation. The core idea is to determine whether the variation between the group means is significantly larger than the variation within each group.

The total variance in the data is broken down into variance explained by the independent variable(s) (between-group variance) and variance not explained by the independent variable(s) (within-group variance or error variance). A key statistic in ANOVA is the F-statistic, which is the ratio of the between-group variance to the within-group variance. A large F-statistic suggests that the differences between group means are statistically significant.

ANOVA is particularly useful when dealing with more than two groups, where conducting multiple pairwise t-tests would increase the probability of a Type I error (falsely rejecting a true null hypothesis). It is a versatile method applicable in various fields, including psychology, medicine, and economics, to test hypotheses about group differences. The assumptions of ANOVA typically include normality of residuals, homogeneity of variances, and independence of observations.
