Varastointihäiriö refers to a group of genetic disorders that affect the body's ability to metabolize and store certain molecules, primarily lipids and sometimes carbohydrates. These disorders are inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, meaning an individual must inherit a faulty gene from both parents to be affected. The underlying cause is a deficiency in a specific enzyme responsible for breaking down or transporting particular substances within the cells.

When these substances cannot be processed correctly, they accumulate in various tissues and organs, such as the liver, spleen, brain, and heart. This accumulation can lead to a wide range of symptoms, depending on the specific storage disorder and the molecules involved.
