Vanemuine

Vanemuine is a theatre in Tartu, Estonia. Founded in 1869, it is one of the oldest theatres in the country. The name derives from Vanemuine, a figure in Estonian mythology associated with song and poetry, embodying the performing arts that the theatre promotes.

Historically, Vanemuine played a central role in the Estonian national awakening, presenting Estonian-language performances and helping to foster local talent. Through the late 19th and 20th centuries, it developed into a multi-disciplinary venue and hosted a range of dramatic, musical and ballet performances.

Today, Vanemuine operates as a multi-disciplinary performing arts institution with divisions for drama, opera and ballet. Its repertoire includes classical drama, contemporary theatre, operas and ballets, as well as new works and collaborations with visiting companies.

It remains a major cultural institution in Tartu and southern Estonia, contributing to the education and promotion of Estonian language and culture.
