Vanadium pentoxide, with the chemical formula V2O5, is an inorganic compound. It typically appears as a yellow to reddish-brown crystalline solid. It is the most common and important oxide of vanadium.

Vanadium pentoxide is primarily known for its role as a catalyst in the production of sulfuric acid. The Contact process, a major industrial method for manufacturing sulfuric acid, relies heavily on vanadium pentoxide as the active component in its catalytic converter. It facilitates the oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide, a key step in the overall process. Beyond sulfuric acid production, it also finds applications as a catalyst in other organic reactions and in the production of certain ceramics and pigments.

In terms of its chemical properties, vanadium pentoxide is amphoteric, meaning it can react with both acids and bases. It is a strong oxidizing agent. It is sparingly soluble in water, forming a solution that is acidic. When heated to high temperatures, it can decompose. Exposure to vanadium pentoxide dust can be an irritant to the respiratory system and skin.
