Valoärsykkyys, also known as photophobia, is an abnormal intolerance to light. It is not a disease in itself, but rather a symptom of an underlying condition. This sensitivity can manifest as discomfort, pain, or even a feeling of being overwhelmed when exposed to normal levels of light. Even bright sunlight or indoor lighting can trigger these symptoms.

The causes of valoärsykkyys are varied. It can be associated with eye conditions such as migraines, eye infections like conjunctivitis or keratitis, uveitis, or dry eye syndrome. Neurological conditions, including meningitis or encephalitis, can also lead to light sensitivity. Certain medications and even alcohol consumption can sometimes induce temporary photophobia.

Symptoms typically include a strong urge to close the eyes, squinting, watering eyes, headaches, and a burning sensation in the eyes. The severity can range from mild discomfort to debilitating pain, significantly impacting daily activities.

This may involve managing migraines, treating infections, or adjusting medications. In some cases, tinted glasses, sunglasses, or avoiding bright lights can provide symptomatic relief.
