Valaistuslähteestä, in Finnish, translates to "light source." A light source is any object that emits electromagnetic radiation in the visible spectrum, allowing us to see. These sources can be natural or artificial. Natural light sources include the sun, stars, and certain biological organisms like fireflies or bioluminescent deep-sea creatures. The sun is by far the most significant natural light source for Earth, providing the energy for most life.

Artificial light sources are man-made and have revolutionized human society, enabling activity and productivity after dark. Common examples include incandescent bulbs, fluorescent lamps, halogen lamps, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Incandescent bulbs produce light by heating a filament until it glows, while fluorescent lamps use a gas discharge to excite a phosphor coating. LEDs are semiconductor devices that emit light when an electric current passes through them, and they are known for their energy efficiency and long lifespan.

The study and application of light sources fall under the realm of optics and lighting technology. Different light sources have distinct properties, such as color temperature, brightness (luminance), and spectral distribution, which influence their suitability for various applications, from general illumination to specialized tasks like photography or medical procedures. Understanding the characteristics of a light source is crucial for effective and efficient lighting design.
