Vakcinácie, commonly known as vaccinations or immunizations, are a crucial public health measure designed to protect individuals and communities from infectious diseases. They involve administering a vaccine, which is a biological preparation that provides active acquired immunity to a particular infectious disease. Vaccines typically contain an agent that resembles the disease-causing microorganism, such as weakened or killed forms of the microbe, its toxins, or one of its surface proteins.

When a vaccine is introduced into the body, the immune system recognizes the foreign substance and mounts a response, creating antibodies and memory cells. If the vaccinated individual is later exposed to the actual pathogen, their immune system can quickly and effectively fight it off, preventing or significantly reducing the severity of the illness. This process is known as immunization.

The effectiveness of vaccines in eradicating or controlling diseases like smallpox, polio, and measles is well-documented. Widespread vaccination programs are essential for achieving herd immunity, a form of indirect protection that occurs when a sufficient percentage of a population has become immune to an infection, thereby reducing the likelihood of infection for individuals who lack immunity. Vaccines undergo rigorous testing and regulatory approval processes to ensure their safety and efficacy before being made available to the public. While rare side effects can occur, the benefits of vaccination in preventing serious illness, disability, and death far outweigh the risks.
