Vaihtotalous, also known as the barter system, is a method of exchange where goods or services are directly traded for other goods or services without the use of money. This economic system predates the widespread use of currency and was common in many ancient societies. In a pure barter system, a transaction requires a "double coincidence of wants," meaning that each party must have something the other desires at the same time. For example, a farmer with surplus wheat would need to find a baker who had bread and wanted wheat.

While simple in concept, barter systems can be inefficient. Determining the relative value of different goods and services can be challenging, and the lack of a standardized medium of exchange can make large-scale or complex transactions difficult. Furthermore, the indivisibility of certain goods can pose a problem; for instance, a person might want to trade a cow for many small items, but a cow cannot be easily divided.

Despite its limitations, barter continues to exist in various forms today. It can be observed in informal exchanges between individuals, within certain communities, or as a supplementary economic activity during times of monetary instability or crisis. Modern forms of barter may involve organized exchanges or online platforms that facilitate the trading of goods and services without direct monetary payment. The principle remains the same: an exchange of value based on mutual need and agreement.
