Vaihtosumma, or "exchange value" in English, is a fundamental economic concept that refers to the quantitative aspect of the value of a commodity or service in terms of other goods or services. Unlike use value, which pertains to the utility or satisfaction derived from a good or service, exchange value focuses on how much of one item can be traded for another within a market economy.

The concept of vaihtosumma is central to classical economic theory, particularly in the works of economists like Adam Smith and Karl Marx. In Smith’s *The Wealth of Nations*, exchange value is tied to labor theory, where the value of a product is determined by the amount of labor required to produce it. Marx expanded on this idea, arguing that exchange value reflects the social labor embodied in a commodity, though he also introduced the distinction between exchange value and use value to highlight potential contradictions in market economies.

In practice, vaihtosumma is often measured through prices set in a market, where supply and demand determine how much of one good can be traded for another. For example, if one unit of good A can be exchanged for two units of good B, the exchange value of good A relative to good B is established. However, exchange value is not fixed; it fluctuates based on changes in production costs, consumer preferences, and economic conditions.

Critics of the concept argue that exchange value alone does not account for qualitative differences between goods, such as their desirability or cultural significance.
