Vahingonteko, a Finnish legal term, translates to "damage" or "destruction" and refers to the criminal act of causing harm or damage to another person's property. This offense is codified in the Finnish Criminal Code, specifically under Chapter 35, titled "Of Property Damage." The core of vahingonteko lies in the intentional or negligent destruction, damage, or impairment of movable or immovable property belonging to someone else.

The severity of the offense can vary, influencing the penalties imposed. Factors such as the value of the damaged property, the extent of the damage, and the intent of the perpetrator are taken into account. Minor damage might be considered a petty offense, while significant destruction or damage to valuable property can lead to more serious charges, including fines or imprisonment.

To constitute vahingonteko, the act must be unlawful and result in actual harm or loss to the property owner. The perpetrator must have acted with either intent, meaning they deliberately set out to cause damage, or negligence, where they failed to exercise the reasonable care expected of them, leading to the damage.
