VINnummer is an abbreviation for Vehicle Identification Number, a unique 17-character code assigned to every motor vehicle manufactured. This alphanumeric code is a global standard, ensuring that each vehicle has a distinct identifier throughout its lifespan. The VIN is crucial for a variety of purposes, including vehicle registration, insurance claims, theft recovery, and maintaining service records. It provides a standardized way to track a vehicle's history, ownership, and technical specifications.

The structure of a VIN is not arbitrary; it contains specific information about the vehicle. The first three characters, known as the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), indicate the country of origin and the manufacturer. The next six characters form the Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS), which can describe the vehicle's make, model, engine type, and body style, though the exact meaning of these characters can vary by manufacturer. The final eight characters constitute the Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS). This section includes a serial number and, in most cases, the model year and assembly plant code.

Since 1981, the VIN has followed a standardized format established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Before this standardization, VIN formats could differ significantly between manufacturers and regions, making vehicle identification more complex. The VIN is typically found on a metal plate located on the dashboard, visible through the windshield, and also stamped onto the vehicle's chassis.
