Värvilaengut

Värvilaengut, often translated as "color length" or "wavelength of color," is a fundamental concept in understanding light and color. It refers to the physical property of light that corresponds to our perception of different colors. Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation, and it exists as waves. The distance between successive crests of these waves is known as the wavelength.

Different wavelengths of visible light stimulate different types of cone cells in our eyes, which our brains then interpret as distinct colors. For example, light with a wavelength of approximately 700 nanometers is perceived as red, while light around 450 nanometers is perceived as blue. The spectrum of visible light, often remembered by the acronym ROYGBIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet), represents the range of wavelengths that humans can see, from longer wavelengths (red) to shorter wavelengths (violet).

Beyond the visible spectrum, electromagnetic radiation exists at wavelengths both longer and shorter than what we can perceive. Infrared radiation has longer wavelengths than red light, and ultraviolet radiation has shorter wavelengths than violet light.
