Understanding subtraction involves recognizing its properties. For instance, subtraction is not commutative, meaning the order of the numbers matters (a - b is generally not equal to b - a). It is also not associative. When subtracting zero from a number, the number remains unchanged (a - 0 = a). When subtracting a number from itself, the result is zero (a - a = 0). These properties are essential for performing calculations accurately and efficiently.
