Upplösningstest

Upplösningstest, often translated as resolution test, is a method used to determine the resolving power of an optical instrument or a display system. It quantifies how well fine details can be distinguished in an image.

The core principle of a resolution test involves presenting a target with a series of progressively smaller, often regularly spaced lines or patterns. These targets are viewed through the system under test. Observers then determine the smallest element that can be clearly resolved. For optical instruments like telescopes or microscopes, this might involve observing features on a specialized test chart. For display systems such as monitors or cameras, it often involves displaying patterns of alternating black and white lines of varying thickness and spacing.

The results of a resolution test are typically expressed in units of line pairs per millimeter (lp/mm) for optical systems, or pixels per line (or megapixels for cameras) for digital imaging devices. A higher number indicates a greater ability to resolve fine details. Factors influencing resolution include the quality of lenses, aperture size, diffraction limits, pixel size, and image processing algorithms. Understanding resolution is crucial for selecting appropriate equipment for specific applications, from scientific imaging to everyday photography and display viewing.
