Unitsmorphemes

Unitsmorphemes are a linguistic concept referring to morphemes that can stand alone as independent words and also function as grammatical markers. These morphemes carry both lexical meaning and grammatical function, blurring the lines between content words and function words. For example, in English, the morpheme "run" can be a verb (lexical meaning: to move rapidly on foot) and also indicate present tense when used with a plural subject or first/second person pronoun (grammatical function: present tense). Similarly, "walked" contains the root "walk" with lexical meaning and the suffix "-ed" which signifies past tense, also a grammatical marker.

The concept of unitsmorphemes highlights the complex nature of morphemes, which are the smallest meaningful units of language. Unlike bound morphemes, which must be attached to another morpheme (like the plural "-s" or the past tense "-ed" in isolation), unitsmorphemes possess a degree of autonomy. They can be considered "free" morphemes in that they can appear as complete words, but they also retain the ability to modify or convey grammatical information when attached to other morphemes.
