Umfangsmiklu

Umfangsmiklu is a coined term used in German-language contexts to denote a metric for the spatial extent of microbial populations in a defined environment. The term does not refer to a single established measure and remains informal and context-dependent. It has appeared in niche glossaries, methodological discussions, and speculative writings since the early 2020s.

Etymology: A portmanteau of Umfang (extent, scope) and a suffix -miklu (a neologism). In practice, Umfangsmiklu is used to describe how far a microbial community extends from a central point or distribution center, and to compare how widely different communities spread in similar habitats.

Definition and calculation: There is no universal definition. In common usage, it denotes either the maximum radial distance capturing a specified fraction of community abundance, or the area/volume occupied by the community above a defined abundance threshold.
