Ulithi

Ulithi is an atoll in the western Pacific Ocean, located about 560 kilometers (350 mi) east of the Philippines and 1,400 kilometers (870 mi) southwest of Guam. It is part of the Federated States of Micronesia, specifically within the state of Yap. The atoll consists of over 40 islands and islets, with a total land area of approximately 4.5 square kilometers (1.7 sq mi). The largest island is Falalap. The lagoon at Ulithi is one of the largest in the world, covering an area of about 1,360 square kilometers (525 sq mi).

Historically, Ulithi served as a significant naval base for the United States during World War II. Its large, sheltered lagoon provided a crucial anchorage for the U.S. Third Fleet in the final months of the war. Following the war, the islands returned to their traditional use. The population of Ulithi is composed of Micronesians, who primarily speak the Ulithian language. The economy of Ulithi is largely subsistence-based, relying on fishing and agriculture, with some income derived from tourism and government employment. The environment of Ulithi is characterized by coral reefs, sandy beaches, and tropical vegetation. The atoll is home to diverse marine life.
