Udskolingen

Udskolingen is the final phase of the Danish compulsory education, within the folkeskole. It typically covers seventh through ninth grade, and in some municipalities the tenth grade is included as part of udskolingen. It follows indskolingen and precedes the optional upper secondary education. The main purpose is to consolidate core competences, broaden subject understanding, and prepare students for the transition to upper secondary education and adulthood.

The curriculum emphasizes core subjects—Danish, mathematics, English and science—while allowing for increased elective and project-based work. Teaching focuses on developing academic skills, critical thinking, collaboration, and independent learning. Schools also provide guidance and counseling to help students make informed choices about upper secondary pathways, such as gymnasium (general upper secondary), erhvervsgymnasium (vocational upper secondary), or HF (higher preparatory examination) programs, as well as other vocational routes.

Assessment includes ongoing classroom assessment, tests, and provision of feedback aimed at supporting progression. The udskolingen period places emphasis on increased student responsibility, self-management, and preparation for more specialized study later in upper secondary education. The exact grade span and approach can vary by municipality, but the overarching aim is to ensure a coherent progression from primary schooling to diverse upper secondary options, reduce drop-out risk, and support inclusive education.
