Udhamsingh

Udhamsingh was an Indian revolutionary freedom fighter who is primarily known for assassinating Michael O'Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of Punjab, in London. This act was carried out in retaliation for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar, where O'Dwyer had ordered troops to fire on unarmed civilians.

Born in 1900, Udhamsingh was orphaned at a young age and grew up in an Amritsar orphanage. The Jallianwala Bagh massacre, which occurred in 1919, deeply affected him and fueled his desire for revenge against the British authorities responsible. He spent years planning and traveling to gather support and resources for his mission.

In 1940, Udhamsingh finally executed his plan by shooting Michael O'Dwyer at a meeting of the East India Association and the Royal Central Asian Society in Caxton Hall, London. He was immediately arrested and put on trial. During his trial, he famously stated that he did it because he had waited for the opportunity and considered it his duty to do so. He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to death. Udhamsingh was executed in July 1940. His actions have made him a significant figure in India's struggle for independence, revered by many as a martyr.
