In the context of materials science, UV absorbers are frequently incorporated into plastics, coatings, and textiles. Exposure to UV radiation can cause degradation of these materials, leading to discoloration, brittleness, and loss of physical properties. UV absorbers function by absorbing the harmful UV energy and dissipating it as heat, thereby preventing it from damaging the material's molecular structure. In personal care products, UV absorbers are crucial components of sunscreens. They work by absorbing specific wavelengths of UV radiation, primarily UVB and UVA rays, which are known to cause sunburn, premature aging, and increase the risk of skin cancer. Different types of UV absorbers are used, targeting different parts of the UV spectrum to provide broad-spectrum protection.

The mechanism of action for most UV absorbers involves a process of excitation and relaxation. When a UV photon strikes a UV absorber molecule, it excites an electron to a higher energy level. The molecule then quickly returns to its ground state, releasing the absorbed energy through non-radiative pathways, typically as heat. This cyclical process allows a single UV absorber molecule to absorb and dissipate many UV photons without being permanently altered.
