UNMEE

The United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) was a United Nations peacekeeping mission established in 1993 to monitor the ceasefire between Ethiopia and Eritrea, which had been fighting a border war since 1998. The mission was mandated by United Nations Security Council Resolution 822, which called for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of troops from the border area.

UNMEE was headquartered in Asmara, Eritrea, and had a mandate to monitor the ceasefire, facilitate the return of refugees, and assist in the establishment of a demilitarized zone. The mission was initially composed of 2,000 troops from various countries, but this number was reduced to 1,200 by 1996.

In 1998, the Eritrean government accused Ethiopian forces of violating the ceasefire, leading to a resumption of hostilities. UNMEE was unable to prevent the outbreak of war, and the mission was withdrawn in 2000. The United Nations subsequently established the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) to assist in the peace process and facilitate the return of refugees.

UNMEE was a significant step in the United Nations' efforts to promote peace and stability in the Horn of Africa. However, the mission's failure to prevent the outbreak of war in 1998 highlighted the challenges of maintaining peace in the region. The mission was eventually replaced by the African Union Transition Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (ATM) in 2007.
