Uranium-235 enrichment is a process used to increase the concentration of the fissile isotope uranium-235 in natural uranium, which is primarily composed of the isotope uranium-238. Natural uranium contains approximately 0.7% uranium-235, while enriched uranium typically has a concentration of 3-5% uranium-235. This enriched form is essential for the operation of nuclear reactors and the production of nuclear weapons.

The enrichment process involves separating uranium-235 from uranium-238 using various methods, the most common of which are gaseous diffusion and gas centrifuge. In the gaseous diffusion method, uranium hexafluoride (UF6) gas is passed through porous membranes, where the lighter uranium-235 atoms diffuse through more quickly than the heavier uranium-238 atoms. In the gas centrifuge method, UF6 gas is spun in centrifuges, causing the lighter uranium-235 atoms to migrate towards the outer wall, while the heavier uranium-238 atoms remain in the center.

Enriched uranium is highly regulated due to its potential use in nuclear weapons. International agreements, such as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, aim to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons by controlling the enrichment of uranium and other fissile materials. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) monitors and verifies the compliance of signatory countries with these agreements.

Enriched uranium is used in nuclear power plants to fuel the fission reactions that generate heat, which is then converted into electricity. It is also used in research reactors and in the production of medical isotopes.
