Täyshybridijärjestelmä, often translated as full hybrid system, refers to a type of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) powertrain that can operate in multiple modes, allowing it to run solely on electric power, solely on gasoline power, or a combination of both. This system typically includes a gasoline engine, one or more electric motors, and a battery pack.

The key characteristic of a full hybrid is its ability to drive exclusively on electric power for short distances at low speeds, such as during city driving or when starting from a standstill. This is made possible by a sufficiently sized electric motor and battery that can provide the necessary torque and energy. When more power is required, such as during acceleration or at higher speeds, the gasoline engine engages. The system intelligently switches between these power sources or blends them to optimize fuel efficiency and performance.

Regenerative braking is a crucial component of full hybrid systems. During deceleration or braking, the electric motor acts as a generator, converting the vehicle's kinetic energy back into electrical energy and storing it in the battery. This recovered energy can then be used to power the electric motor later, further enhancing fuel economy. Unlike mild hybrid systems, full hybrids can achieve significant fuel savings due to their ability to drive on electric power alone. They do not require external charging from a power source, as the battery is recharged through regenerative braking and by the gasoline engine.
