Tähtipopulaatioiden

Tähtipopulaatioiden, or stellar populations, are groups of stars that share common characteristics, such as age, chemical composition, and spatial distribution. These populations are fundamental to understanding the structure and evolution of galaxies. In the Milky Way galaxy, for example, there are two main stellar populations: the thin disk and the thick disk. The thin disk contains younger stars, with a higher metallicity, and is characterized by a flat, spiral structure. In contrast, the thick disk is older, has a lower metallicity, and exhibits a more spherical distribution. Additionally, there are the halo populations, which include globular clusters and field stars, and are the oldest and most metal-poor components of the galaxy. These populations provide valuable insights into the formation and evolution of galaxies, as well as the processes that shape their stellar content.
