Työkaluvihjeet

Työkaluvihjeet, known in English as tooltips, are a common graphical user interface (GUI) element that provides brief, contextual information to a user about a GUI element, such as a button, icon, or menu item. When a user hovers their mouse pointer over a specific GUI element for a short period, a small box, often containing text, appears near the pointer. This box is the työkaluvihje.

The primary purpose of a työkaluvihje is to enhance usability by offering immediate explanations without cluttering the main interface. They are particularly useful for less obvious icons or complex features, helping users understand their functionality without needing to consult separate documentation or tutorials. For example, a toolbar icon that represents a "save" function might display the text "Save document" when the mouse hovers over it.
