Tyhjiöfiltraatio, also known as vacuum filtration, is a laboratory technique used to separate solids from liquids or gases using a vacuum. This method is widely employed in chemistry, biology, and various industrial processes. The basic principle involves creating a pressure difference across a filter medium. A vacuum is applied to the side of the filter where the desired material is being collected, drawing the liquid or gas through the filter while retaining the solid particles on the other side.

The equipment for vacuum filtration typically includes a vacuum flask, a Büchner funnel, filter paper, and a vacuum source such as a vacuum pump or a water aspirator. The solid-liquid mixture is placed in the Büchner funnel, which is fitted with filter paper. When the vacuum is applied, the liquid passes through the filter paper and collects in the vacuum flask, leaving the solid residue in the funnel. This technique is particularly useful for collecting precipitates from reaction mixtures or for clarifying solutions.

Compared to simple gravity filtration, vacuum filtration is significantly faster due to the enhanced pressure gradient. It is also more efficient at separating fine solid particles. However, it is important to note that vacuum filtration should not be used with volatile solvents or fine powders that could be drawn into the vacuum system, potentially causing damage or contamination. Proper setup and careful operation are essential for effective and safe use of this technique.
