Tuumajõudu

Tuumajõudu is an Estonian term that translates to "nuclear power." It refers to the energy released from the nucleus of an atom, typically through nuclear fission or fusion. This energy can be harnessed to generate electricity. Nuclear power plants are facilities designed to control nuclear reactions and convert the released energy into usable forms.

The process of nuclear fission involves splitting the nucleus of heavy atoms, such as uranium or plutonium, into smaller nuclei. This splitting releases a significant amount of energy in the form of heat and radiation. The heat is then used to produce steam, which drives turbines connected to generators, producing electricity. Nuclear fusion, on the other hand, involves the merging of light atomic nuclei, such as hydrogen isotopes, to form a heavier nucleus, also releasing a large amount of energy. Fusion is the process that powers stars, including our Sun.

Nuclear power generation is characterized by its high energy density, meaning a small amount of nuclear fuel can produce a large amount of energy. It is also a low-carbon source of electricity, as it does not produce greenhouse gas emissions during operation. However, concerns regarding nuclear power include the safe disposal of radioactive waste, the potential for nuclear accidents, and the risk of nuclear proliferation. International organizations and national regulatory bodies oversee the safety and security of nuclear facilities and materials.
