Tullimuistion

Tullimuistion, also known as the "Tullimuistion Incident," refers to a significant event in the history of the Tuvalu Islands, a small Polynesian nation in the South Pacific. The incident occurred on August 1, 1977, when a group of Tuvaluan activists, led by Sione Ngatule, stormed the Tuvaluan High Commission in London, demanding greater autonomy and self-determination for their country. The activists, who were known as the "Tullimuistion Group," were protesting against the British colonial administration's perceived neglect and lack of support for Tuvalu's development.

The name "Tullimuistion" is derived from the Tuvaluan language and translates to "to stand up for oneself." The incident gained international attention and sparked a debate about the future of Tuvalu and other Pacific Island nations. The British government, recognizing the growing demands for independence, eventually granted Tuvalu limited self-government in 1978, which was further expanded in 1980. The Tullimuistion Incident is considered a pivotal moment in Tuvalu's struggle for independence and self-determination, and it is commemorated annually on August 1 as a public holiday.
