Trypanbluesyrjinnällä is a technique used in cell biology to assess cell viability. It relies on the property of trypan blue dye, which is unable to penetrate the membranes of living cells. However, when a cell's membrane is compromised, as is the case with dead or dying cells, the dye can enter and stain the cytoplasm blue.

The procedure typically involves mixing a cell suspension with a dilute solution of trypan blue. This mixture is then observed under a microscope. Live cells, with intact membranes, will appear clear and unstained. In contrast, dead or damaged cells will take up the trypan blue dye and appear distinctly blue.

By counting the number of unstained (live) and stained (dead) cells within a defined area or volume, researchers can determine the percentage of viable cells in the sample.
