Troofivõrgustikud, also known as food webs, represent the complex feeding relationships within an ecological community. They illustrate how energy flows through an ecosystem by depicting who eats whom. Unlike a simple food chain, which shows a single linear pathway, a food web accounts for multiple interconnected chains.

Each level in a food web is called a trophic level. Producers, such as plants and algae, form the base of the food web as they convert sunlight into energy through photosynthesis. Primary consumers, or herbivores, feed on producers. Secondary consumers, which can be carnivores or omnivores, eat primary consumers. Tertiary consumers eat secondary consumers, and so on, up to apex predators at the top of the food web.

The interactions within a food web are dynamic. Changes in the population of one species can have cascading effects on other species within the web. For instance, a decline in a prey population might lead to a decrease in the population of its predator. Conversely, the removal of a predator could result in an overpopulation of its prey. Understanding these intricate connections is crucial for comprehending ecosystem stability and health.
