Transportprotokollmodelle provide a structured way to understand and design how data is transferred across networks. These models typically break down the complex process of network communication into distinct layers, each responsible for a specific set of functions. By dividing the task, each layer can focus on its specialized role, and modifications can be made to one layer without necessarily affecting others. This modularity simplifies the development and troubleshooting of network protocols.

The most well-known transport protocol model is the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model, which defines seven layers: the Physical Layer, Data Link Layer, Network Layer, Transport Layer, Session Layer, Presentation Layer, and Application Layer. Each layer interacts with the layers immediately above and below it. Another widely used model is the TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) model, which is simpler and generally has four or five layers, often combining some functions of the OSI model. These models are fundamental to the internet's operation and the design of various network applications and protocols. They serve as conceptual frameworks to ensure interoperability and standardization among different networking technologies.
