Examples include P-glycoprotein (P-gp) limiting brain penetration, and organic anion transporting polypeptides (OATPs) and organic cation transporters (OCTs) mediating hepatic and renal handling. Transporter interactions can drive drug–drug interactions and impact therapeutic efficacy, making transporter studies central to drug development and personalized medicine.

In biotechnology and research, transporters are exploited to improve production strains, enable bioremediation, or develop biosensors. Databases such as the Transporter Classification Database (TCDB) catalog transporter families, substrates, and functions, while experimental approaches like uptake assays and expression systems characterize transporter specificity.
