Transchelation

Transchelation is a process in which a protein is degraded by the action of a protease, and the resulting amino acids are then reused for the synthesis of a new protein. This process is a form of protein recycling and is an important mechanism for regulating protein levels in cells. Transchelation occurs in the cytoplasm and involves the following steps:

1. A protease, such as the ubiquitin-proteasome system, degrades a target protein into its constituent amino acids.

2. The released amino acids are then transported into the cytosol, where they are used as a source of nitrogen and carbon for the synthesis of new proteins.

3. The new protein is synthesized on ribosomes, using the amino acids released from the degraded protein as building blocks.
