Transactiegroepen, also known as transaction groups, are a fundamental concept in database management and distributed systems. They are a mechanism used to ensure the integrity and consistency of multiple operations that are logically related. The primary purpose of a transactiegroep is to treat a collection of individual operations as a single, indivisible unit. This means that either all operations within the group are successfully completed, or none of them are.

This principle is often referred to as "all or nothing" and is a core component of the ACID properties (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability) that are crucial for reliable data management. Atomicity, in particular, is directly addressed by transactiegroepen. If any part of a transactiegroep fails, the entire group is rolled back, restoring the system to its state before the group began. This prevents partial updates or inconsistent data.

Transactiegroepen are essential in scenarios where data is spread across multiple systems or requires coordination between different services. For example, in an e-commerce transaction, placing an order might involve updating inventory, processing a payment, and sending a confirmation email. Each of these actions would be part of a single transactiegroep. If the payment processing fails, the inventory update and email sending should also be undone to maintain data consistency.

Implementing and managing transactiegroepen can involve complex distributed transaction protocols, such as two-phase commit (2PC), to coordinate operations across different nodes or services. The effective use of transactiegroepen is vital for building robust and reliable applications.
