Trafikverkets

Trafikverket, or the Swedish Transport Administration, is a government agency in Sweden responsible for the long-term planning of the transport system and for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the state-controlled road and rail networks. Established in 2010 through the merger of the Swedish National Road Administration (Vägverket) and the Swedish Rail Administration (Banverket), it operates under the Ministry of Infrastructure and maintains offices across the country.

Its mission is to ensure safe, efficient, accessible, and environmentally sustainable transport. The agency plans and funds investment in roads and rail, builds and maintains the state network, manages traffic flows, and supports the development of public transport and freight services. It engages in safety improvements, accessibility upgrades, and climate- and energy-related initiatives within the transport system.

Trafikverket administers the National Transport Plan and coordinates with municipalities, regional authorities, and private contractors on major infrastructure projects. It funds and oversees construction and maintenance, conducts asset management, and monitors performance through metrics and reporting. The agency also collects data on traffic, travel demand, and infrastructure conditions to inform policy and planning.

While focusing on infrastructure, Trafikverket collaborates with other government bodies such as Transportstyrelsen for regulatory aspects and works within Sweden's transport policy to foster sustainable mobility, reduce congestion, and improve safety. It publishes plans, statistics, and updates related to the national transport system.
