Toxis

Toxis is a term used in speculative biology and fiction to denote a class of potent toxin-like molecules that disrupt cellular processes. The name derives from the word toxin, with the -is suffix used in some fictional taxonomies.

In many works, toxis are described as chemically diverse, ranging from small organic compounds to peptide- or protein-like molecules. They may be produced by bacteria, engineered organisms, plants, or created synthetically, and their effects can be targeted or broad-spectrum.

Common fictional categories describe toxis by mechanism: neurotoxins that interfere with nerve signaling; cytotoxins that damage or kill cells; immunotoxins that modulate immune responses; and environmental toxis that accumulate in air, water, or soil.

Synthesis and handling are often portrayed as challenging and dangerous. In stories, toxis may be extremely potent, with low effective doses and rapid onset, and may require specialized containment and antidotes. Some narratives explore their stability under heat, light, or dilution.

Regulation and ethics appear in world-building: authorities regulate production, transport, and use, while researchers weigh therapeutic potential against misuse. The concept of toxis reflects broader themes about toxins in science fiction and speculative biology.
