Tourné

Tourné is the masculine past participle of tourner, meaning “to turn.” In French, tourné functions as both a past-participial adjective and a verb form, agreeing with the noun it modifies. It broadly describes something that has been turned, rotated, or shaped as a result of turning.

In woodworking and crafts, a tourné object is shaped on a lathe. Phrases such as “un bois tourné” or “une pièce tournée” refer to cylindrical or rounded forms produced by turning, including spindles, balusters, and other decorative elements.

In cuisine, tourné designates a precise cut. “Pommes tournées” are potatoes pared into short, seven-faced barrel shapes with rounded ends, historically produced by paring and trimming to create uniform pieces for even cooking. The technique is part of the broader tournage family of cuts.

In cinema and broadcasting, tourné is used to indicate that a film, segment, or scene has been shot, as in “Le film a été tourné en Italie.” The related noun tournage refers to the shooting or production phase. Note that tournée (with acute é) is the feminine form or a separate noun meaning a tour.
