Toskë

Toskë refers to a subgroup of Albanians who primarily inhabit the southern regions of Albania. They speak the Tosk dialect of the Albanian language, which is one of the two major dialectal divisions of Albanian, the other being Gheg. The Tosk dialect forms the basis of Standard Albanian, the official language of Albania.

Historically, Toskë people have been associated with a more sedentary lifestyle compared to the Gheg who were traditionally more nomadic or semi-nomadic. This difference in lifestyle influenced their cultural practices and social structures. The Tosk region is generally characterized by its mountainous terrain, fertile valleys, and a history of agriculture, particularly olive oil and wine production.

The Toskë played a significant role in the Albanian national awakening and the formation of the modern Albanian state. Many prominent figures in Albania's independence movement and early cultural development hailed from Toskë communities. Their influence is also evident in the country's political and cultural landscape.

Within the broader Tosk population, there are further sub-groups, each with their own distinct characteristics, though they share the common Tosk identity and dialect. The regions traditionally inhabited by Toskë include areas like Gjirokastër, Korçë, Vlorë, and Sarandë. The cultural heritage of the Toskë, encompassing their music, dance, cuisine, and traditions, is an integral part of Albania's rich cultural tapestry.
