Torrijos is a municipality in the province of Toledo, in the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha, Spain. Torrijos is also a Spanish surname. Omar Torrijos Herrera (1929–1981) was a Panamanian military leader who governed Panama as the de facto head of state from 1968 until his death in 1981. He is best known for negotiating the Torrijos-Carter Treaties with the United States in 1977, which established the framework for the transfer of control of the Panama Canal to Panama.
