Toriumreaktoreissa (Thorium reactors) refers to nuclear reactors that utilize thorium as a fuel source. Thorium is a naturally occurring, weakly radioactive metallic element. In its most common isotope, thorium-232, it is not fissile but is fertile. This means it can capture a neutron and, through a series of radioactive decays, transform into uranium-233, which is fissile and can sustain a nuclear chain reaction.

The concept of thorium-based nuclear power has been explored for decades as a potential alternative to uranium-based reactors. Proponents highlight several advantages. Thorium is more abundant than uranium and is found in many parts of the world. Thorium reactors can potentially produce significantly less long-lived radioactive waste compared to conventional uranium reactors, and the waste that is produced may be easier to manage. Furthermore, some thorium reactor designs are considered to be inherently safer, with a reduced risk of meltdown due to their physical properties.

However, challenges remain. Thorium fuel cycles require the production of uranium-233, which itself is radioactive and can be used to produce nuclear weapons, raising proliferation concerns that need to be addressed through robust safeguards. The development of practical and economically viable thorium reactor technologies is also an ongoing area of research and engineering. Several reactor designs, including molten salt reactors and heavy water reactors, are being considered for thorium fuel. While some experimental reactors have operated with thorium, widespread commercial deployment has not yet occurred.
